Are Google and Samsung Sneaking Into iPad Territory?

Apple?s (NASDAQ:AAPL) smaller tablet may still be under wraps, but it appears that Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Samsung are prepared to battle their common rival out in its territory of strength. The two are said to be working together to develop a 10.1-inch tablet, which will take direct aim at Apple?s iPad.

According to NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, the Android partners? new launch will have a 2,560-by-1,600-pixel display with a density of about 299 pixels per inch. The third-generation iPad, Apple?s latest tablet offering, sports a 9.7-inch screen with a 2,048-by-1,536 pixel display that with a density of 264 PPI. And the price range is expected to reflect that. ?It?s going to be a high-end device,? Shim told CNET about the new device. The analyst said his supply chain sources indicated that there was a high possibility that the product will see light of day soon.

Apple?s iPad is dominant in the tablet arena, and though its market has been chipped at by the entry of smaller and cheaper devices from rivals this year, it still had a 70 percent share in the second quarter.

Shim also reiterated a previous rumor that Google was also working on a $99 tablet, though he didn?t offer many other details regarding the manufacturer or specifications.?Google and Samsung have been steadfast partners. Aside from their Android link, Google also already co-brands the Galaxy Nexus?smartphone with the Korean company.
