$500,000 award honors pioneering research by scientist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Douglas C. Wallace, Ph.D., director of the Center for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, will receive the 2012 Genetics Prize of The Gruber Foundation. This prestigious international awarda $500,000 prizerecognizes Wallace's pioneering scientific investigations of the wide-ranging role of mitochondria in the development of disease and as markers of human evolution. Mitochondria are the tiny power plants within the cytoplasm of animal and plant cells.

Wallace will receive the award on November 9 at the annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics in San Francisco. The Gruber Foundation, now based at Yale University, announced the Genetics Prize on June 28. The Foundation's Genetics Prize annually honors leading scientists for groundbreaking contributions to genetics research.

Philip R. Johnson, MD, chief scientific officer at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, acknowledged Wallace's achievements, saying, "The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute is privileged to number Douglas Wallace among our research leaders. His commitment to the field of mitochondrial genetics and his pioneering nature embody the mission of research at CHOP, and his research and leadership are shaping the way we approach therapies for genetic disorders previously considered beyond treatment."

"Douglas Wallace's contributions to our understanding of mitochondrial genetics have changed the way human and medical geneticists think about the role of mitochondria in human health and disease," said Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, chair of the Selection Advisory Board to the Prize. Blackburn, who shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, also received the Gruber Genetics Prize in 2006.

Wallace, who came to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 2010 to launch the Center for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine, first achieved prominence in the 1970s as the leader of a research team at Stanford University that defined the genetics of mitochondrial DNA. This DNA resides within each mitochondrion, as distinct from the more familiar nuclear DNA inside chromosomes. His group showed that human mitochondrial DNA is inherited exclusively from the mother.

This discovery, coupled with other findings, allowed the researchers to reconstruct ancient human migration patterns over hundreds of millennia, a major contribution that bridges genetics and anthropology. Wallace and colleagues also have linked mutations in mitochondrial DNA to a broad range of human diseases, including types of blindness, deafness, metabolic disorders such as diabetes, neuropsychiatric conditions, and age-related diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

The Center for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine at Children's Hospital researches mitochondrial dysfunction in many clinical problems, and also focuses on preclinical studies relevant to developing therapies for mitochondrial diseases, for which few effective clinical treatments currently exist.

Wallace holds the Michael and Charles Barnett Endowed Chair in Pediatric Mitochondrial Medicine at Children's Hospital and also is a professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the nation's premier organization of leading researchers, as well as the Academy's Institute of Medicine, and is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

(AP) ? Egypt's president-elect Mohammed Morsi has vowed to free the blind sheik jailed in the U.S. for a plot to blow up New York City landmarks.

In his first public speech addressing tens of thousands of mostly Islamist supporters, Morsi promised Saturday to work to free Omar Abdel-Rahman, the spiritual leader of men convicted in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

He also promised to free detained Egyptian protesters facing military tribunals.

(AP) ? Michael Phelps finally gets a night off from battling Ryan Lochte.

The 14-time Olympic gold medalist has the spotlight to himself in the 200-meter butterfly final on Thursday night at the U.S. Olympic trials. It's an event Phelps has dominated over the years, including the last three Olympics and three world championships. He owns the world record in it, too.

And without Lochte, it figures to be a race for second place behind Phelps.

Phelps qualified third-fastest in the semifinals on Wednesday night, trailing leader Bobby Bollier and second-place Davis Tarwater. Also trying to get his hand on the wall second will be Scott Clary. Only the top two earn a berth in the London Games.

Phelps will be watching the rest of the field.

"Every race I track where everybody is," he said. "Anything can happen at any given day."

He finally earned his first victory ? and beat Lochte for the first time ? at the trials in the 200 freestyle. It was another thrilling race between the world's two best swimmers. They churned through the water stroke for stroke, the crowd of nearly 13,000 in full voice, until both stuck out their arms at the wall.

Phelps touched first, by five-hundredths of a second.

He won in 1 minute, 45.70 seconds to Lochte's 1:45.75.

Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, might be glad to see his superstar swim a race without Lochte, if only to squash the way they've been toying with each other.

"They are so focused on racing each other, they do stuff like tonight, not take it out so fast," Bowman said. "Michael got ahead, and he was like, 'Well, I'm ahead of Ryan, I'm okay.' And then Ryan is just waiting to make his move, and he makes his move and they do the cat-and-mouse stuff, and in the process of that they forgot to swim fast."

Lochte won their first showdown of the eight-day meet in the 400 individual medley on opening night, his third straight major victory over the winningest Olympian ever. He followed up by edging Phelps in the 200 free semifinals before Phelps got his revenge in the final.

"We kind of see what each other does and play it out by feel the first couple of laps," Phelps said, "and then when it comes down to it we just put every ounce of energy into the last 50 that we can and need to."

Lochte said he went out too slow in the beginning of the 200 free, a mistake he intends to correct when he gets to London. Phelps' winning time was nearly 3 seconds slower than his gold-medal effort in Beijing, though that was aided by high-tech bodysuits, which have since been banned by the world governing body.

"We didn't really try to pick it up until, like, the last 75, so I'll save that for the Olympics," said Lochte, whose time was 1:45.75. "I was just really relaxed for the first 125, and then the last 75, I was like, 'All right, now we've got to put it in gear.' So I kind of waited a little late, but I'll take it."

Lochte will be around Thursday morning competing in the prelims of the 100 free. He's in the same heat as 36-year-old Jason Lezak. Also competing in the sprint event are Nathan Adrian, Cullen Jones and Matt Grevers, who made the team in the 100 backstroke.

Missy Franklin has been expending plenty of energy making her first Olympic team. She won the 100 backstroke, chasing down two-time defending Olympic champion Natalie Coughlin on the final lap to win with an American record of 58.85 seconds.

The 17-year-old nicknamed "Missy the Missile" will swim the 200 free final on Thursday night. Franklin comes in with the third-fastest qualifying time behind Allison Schmitt and Dana Vollmer. The event isn't Franklin's strongest, but she can insert herself into the relay pool for London by finishing among the top six.

"I'm still at this point not even going to consider London," she said. "I'm going to focus here still in the meet. We're not even halfway through it yet, so staying here where I am right now and focusing on the other swims that I have."

Coughlin was looking ahead, too. The 29-year-old swimmer who owns 11 Olympic medals in her long career has one more chance to make her third Olympic team. She would like a shot at winning at least one medal in London, which would tie her with Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres as the most decorated U.S. female Olympians.

Coughlin swims the 100 free prelims on Friday.

"I'm looking forward to that," she said. "For the rest of this season, I'm a freestyler."

The trials haven't gone the way Coughlin expected, but not for lack of preparation.

"I've done everything I could possibly do this year," she said. "My training has been frankly amazing and the races haven't been quite there. I'm a little bummed, but not nearly as much as everyone is expecting me to be."

Thursday night's third final is the women's 200 IM. Caitlin Leverenz and Elizabeth Beisel, already on the team in the 400 IM, are the two fastest qualifiers, followed by Ariana Kukors, the 2009 world champion and world record holder.

Grevers won the 100 back on Wednesday night with the second-fastest time ever, 52.08. Breeja Larson scored a big upset in the 100 breaststroke, outracing world champion Rebecca Soni to make her first Olympics in her first trials.

First-ever deep-space telescope to hunt dangerous asteroids (+video)

The private space telescope forms the heart of Project Sentinel, a deep-space mission being unveiled today in Mountain View, Calif., by a nonprofit group of scientists and explorers that advocates better space rock monitoring.

The hunt is on. A group of scientists has banded together to build the world?s first privately funded deep-space telescope, to hunt for asteroids that could pose a major threat to Earth.

The?private space telescope?forms the heart of Project Sentinel, a deep-space mission being unveiled today (June 28) in Mountain View, Calif., by the B612 Foundation, a nonprofit group of scientists and explorers that has long advocated the exploration of asteroids and better space rock monitoring.

Project Sentinel involves the development of a super-snooper telescope that would be placed in orbit around the sun. The goal, foundation officials say, is to create the first comprehensive dynamic map of our inner solar system.

That map would yield a lively look at the present and future locations and trajectories of?near-Earth asteroids, paving the way to protecting the Earth from future impacts and opening the solar system to future exploration. [Sentinel Space Telescope's Asteroid Mission (Pictures)]??

An asteroid sentinel in space

Ed Lu is B612 chairman and CEO, a former NASA astronaut who has flown on the space shuttle and Russia's Soyuz capsule and lived aboard the International Space Station.

"The reason we?re doing this is because we can!"Lu told SPACE.com

Private organizations can now carry out awe-inspiring and audacious projects that previously only governments could accomplish, Lu said.

"So it isn?t crazy to think of a large telescope being funded privately. In fact, historically, that has been the way large, private?telescopes here on Earth?have been funded. The exception here is that rather than being on the Earth, this one is orbiting the sun," Lu said.

A lot of work has gone into shaping Project Sentinel over the last year, Lu said. Akin to the architectural plans for a building, he said, a preliminary spacecraft and mission design is complete.

"This isn?t a viewgraph," Lu added."What we?ve built is the best technical team on this planet."

A firm fixed-price proposal to carry out Project Sentinel has been submitted by Ball Aerospace of Boulder, Colo., enabled in part by early infrared-detector work funded by B612.

No stranger to big space scopes, Ball Aerospace is the technical sparkplug behind such NASA-sponsored spacecraft as theplanet-hunting Kepler mission?and the infrared Spitzer Space Telescope.

Under a NASA Space Act Agreement signed with B612, the space agency will provide Deep Space Network communications and tracking as well as technical support.

Hunting asteroids for all mankind

Project Sentinel would complete its near-Earth object (NEO) survey work in 5.5 years.

"The line in the sand is for the spacecraft to find 90 percent of near-Earth objects larger than 140 meters [459 feet] in size. That translates into approximately a 100-megaton explosion should one hit the Earth," Lu said. "If we go as long as we think we?re going to go, we?re also going to find the vast majority of Tunguskas, too." [7 Strangest Asteroids in the Solar System]

The Tunguska River in remote Siberia was the site directly under a huge explosion in 1908, an air burst of a large meteoroid or comet fragment estimated to have flattened more than 80 million trees over 830 square miles (2,150 square kilometers).

According to B612, only about 10,000 of the more than half million asteroids ?larger than the?1908 Tunguska asteroidwhose orbits cross Earth?s orbit have been discovered and tracked.

Project Sentinel would find and road-map Earth-bound asteroids with sufficient warning time ? years to decades ? to enable deflection missions.

This all adds up to an awe-inspiring project for the global good, the B612 NEO team said.

Space telescope price tag

What?s the cost to build the Project Sentinel telescope?

"We can?t disclose the final price, but I can give you a ballpark of a few hundred million dollars. Which is, I think, a factor of several less than what NASA could do this for," Lu said.

To foot the bill for Project Sentinel, a worldwide fundraising campaign is being implemented, including outreach to citizens around the globe.

"Our constituency is everybody," said B612 spokeswoman Diane Murphy.

"If you think about it, what we are is a small capital campaign," Lu said. "At any given time in the United States, there?s probably a hundred fundraising campaigns larger than this ? for symphony halls, museums, performing arts centers."

Data pipeline set

As now forecast, Project Sentinel would be launched in 2016 aboard a?SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, Lu said. The spacecraft operations center is to be based at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Project Sentinel would require a gravity slingshot off Venus to enter solar orbit. Data relay would be carried out through the NASA Deep Space Network. Data analysis ? identification of NEO threats ? is to be handled through an existing data pipeline at the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass., and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"When you stand back from this, ? this is like the whole issue of mapping the U.S, and almost everything else that precedes real development and exploration," said former astronaut Rusty Schweickart, B612 chairman emeritus, who was the lunar module pilot on the Apollo 9 mission.

"The meta-view of what we?re doing ? is mapping the Earth, sun, the inner solar system ? the Earth Territory, if you will," Schweickart said. That, he said, would pave the way toward protecting the Earth from impacts and opening the solar system to exploration. ??

Legacy space systems

"An exciting aspect of Ball?s role on Sentinel is leveraging sophisticated technology developed under the Deep Impact, Spitzer, and Kepler missions for the B612 Foundation," said John Troeltzsch, the company?s Sentinel Program manager.

Troeltzsch told SPACE.com the aerospace firm will reuse deep-space elements the company helped pioneer. For the privately funded mission, that could include the science-downlink technology flown on Kepler and the cryogenic thermal-isolation system from the?Spitzer Space Telescope.

The Sentinel ground system will build on the system in daily use by the Kepler mission, which is supplied to Ball by the LASP at Colorado-Boulder.

"Ball has been working on the mission concept for a?NEO survey mission?like Sentinel since 2005. This has allowed us to refine and iterate the design to a state of maturity that supports a commercial offering to B612," Troeltzsch said. "Although there are challenges in front of us, like the development of the focal plane detectors, the overall system is based on proven, high-heritage systems."

Troeltzsch said it?s not every day you can have fun working on a powerful space telescope and help protect the planet at the same time.

?Sooner or later one of the NEOs that Sentinel will discover will end up on a?collision course with the Earth. I am sure that my kids and grandkids will appreciate the foresight B612 has shown in sponsoring this mission to help protect us all,? Troeltzsch concluded.

Leonard David has been reporting on the space industry for more than five decades. He is a winner of last year's National Space Club Press Award and former editor-in-chief of the National Space Society's Ad Astra and Space World magazines. He has written for SPACE.com since 1999.

Famed Crystal Cathedral to become Catholic church

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) ? Retired schoolteacher Dolores Rommel has followed the Rev. Robert H. Schuller almost her entire adult life: She was baptized in his church as a young woman, sent her children to his Sunday school and laid her husband to rest near the soaring, glass-paned Crystal Cathedral that was to be the televangelist's ultimate legacy.

But when the Roman Catholic church bought the famous sanctuary and its cemetery in bankruptcy court last year, Rommel began looking for another spiritual home. She has resigned herself to being entombed in a Catholic cemetery so she can be near her husband, but not without plenty of soul-searching.

"I have no choice. I am going to be buried there because that was his choice and we paid a lot for that vault," said Rommel, who bought a two-casket tomb with her husband in 1997. "At the time, who would know that this was going to happen?"

The Crystal Cathedral congregation recently announced that it will vacate its modernist steel-and-glass church by June 2013. The Diocese of Orange renamed the church Christ Cathedral earlier this month and plans to turn the Protestant landmark where the "Hour of Power" TV ministry is based into its spiritual and administrative headquarters. The fast-growing, 1.2 million-person diocese bought the church campus for nearly $58 million last year.

The upcoming transition has been an emotional one for many longtime congregants like Rommel, who watched Schuller's blockbuster dynasty struggle to survive in recent years amid declining donations, a disastrous leadership transition and an endless family squabble that split the congregation.

Schuller built the church ? an architectural marvel with 10,000 windows and room for nearly 3,000 worshippers and 1,000 musicians ? in 1980, a decade after he began broadcasting his sermons on the "power of possibility thinking" into the homes of millions of evangelical Christians each Sunday.

Reaction to the church's sale was at first bitter: The children of one prominent philanthropist publicly threatened to disinter their father from its cemetery and another congregant sued for $30 billion, saying the transfer to Catholic hands had "permanently desecrated, defamed, polluted and cursed" the church.

Tempers have since cooled, but the recently announced timeline for the transfer to Catholic hands has revived questions about the fate of Schuller's ministry once it leaves behind the iconic building that gave it its name. The diocese will grant the congregation six months rent-free at a nearby Catholic church and it plans to continue filming the "Hour of Power."

"We could film in a studio," said John Charles, the new CEO of Crystal Cathedral Ministries. "We're still going to have the same great preaching, the same great music and pulpit guests. The ministry is not about the building ? it's more about our congregation and who we are."

Some, however, wonder whether the ministry will fizzle out ? or shrink dramatically ? without the building that gave it its name. Broadcasts of the "Hour of Power" were recently cut back to 30 minutes on Lifetime and Discovery channels and Schuller, now 85, no longer appears on the program and hasn't attended church since last fall.

His son and daughter, who each failed to assume their father's mantle, are no longer involved in the ministry. Sheila Schuller Coleman formed a new church after a falling out last year.

The congregation, which now numbers up to 1,700 people each Sunday, will also change its name once it moves.

"It really needs to go back to square one and say, 'Who are we going to be? We can't be what we were 10 to 15 years ago,'" said Kurt Fredrickson, an associate dean and assistant professor of pastoral ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary. "There could be resurrection there or it could be that we say goodbye to a congregation and bless them and be grateful and thank God for years and years and years of really wonderful ministry."

Schuller tapped into California's blossoming car culture and the optimism of a post-World War II generation when he began preaching in 1955 from the roof of a snack bar at a drive-in movie theater in suburban Orange County. He exhorted worshippers to "come as you are in the family car" and his upbeat message resonated.

By 1970, Schuller was airing the "Hour of Power" and in 1980, he dedicated the Crystal Cathedral, an architectural marvel that served as the backdrop for the show. At its peak, the broadcast attracted 20 million viewers around the world.

The Rev. Christopher Smith, the Catholic episcopal vicar and rector of the newly minted Christ Cathedral, recalls as a child watching from his grandparents' backyard as the young, energetic evangelist preached from the roof of the drive-in theater's concession stand. Now, Smith is in charge of a delicate transition as the diocese prepares to move into a religious and architectural touchstone cherished by evangelicals around the world.

The diocese hopes to honor Schuller and the history of his ministry with a museum that begins with the drive-in movie theater and ends with the Catholic acquisition. The diocese may also move its archives, which are currently not publicly available, to the cathedral grounds, said Smith.

"I just hope that we attend well to all the different people who are affected by this and also that this place be seen as a place where everyone is welcome to find hope and consolation and inspiration, whether they're Catholic or not," Smith said.

"That's the bishop's desire ? that we are a real credible witness to Christ in the world through our work here."

Sen. Orrin Hatch: Will the tea party bring him down in Utah?

Six-term US Sen. Orrin Hatch faces his first Republican primary election since 1976, challenged by tea party favorite State Senator?Dan Liljenquist. Will Hatch suffer the same political fate at the hands of the tea party as defeated GOP Senate veterans Bob Bennett and Richard Lugar?

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / June 24, 2012

Utah state Sen. Dan Liljenquist and US Sen. Orrin Hatch debate at KSL in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday, June 15. They face each other in a Republican primary election Tuesday.

Two years ago, a conservative US senator in conservative Utah ? three-term incumbent Bob Bennett ? got the boot at the Republican state nominating convention, losing to tea party favorite Mike Lee at a time when ever having shown any signs of legislative compromise was a mark of wobbly disloyalty to the conservative cause.

This time around, Utah?s other US senator ? six-term incumbent Orrin Hatch ? got the same kind of scare. State Senator?Dan Liljenquist ? another tea party favorite ? forced Hatch into a primary election to be held this Tuesday, Hatch?s first primary challenge since he began his political career in 1976.

So is Orrin Hatch fated to receive the same kind of rough tea party treatment as Bob Bennett (or, more recently, Richard Lugar in Indiana) ? relegated to retirement or life as a lobbyist?

It seems unlikely.

Hatch has spent some $10 million on his re-election bid (more than 10 times his opponent). He agreed to only one radio debate with Mr. Liljenquist who ? 40 years younger than Hatch ? is a literal as well as figurative fresh face and might have been seen as such on TV. He emphasizes his conservative credentials (a 90 percent lifetime rating by the American Conservative Union), and he doesn?t mention his friendly relationship with the late Sen. Ted Kennedy or the legislation they worked on together.

How much do you know about the Tea Party? A quiz.

Still, tea party activists and organizations have Hatch in their political gunsights.

When Liljenquist announced his candidacy in January, Matt Kibbe, president of tea party powerhouse FreedomWorks, had this to say: ?Senator Orrin Hatch is a 36-year incumbent who has consistently abandoned limited government principles, authored legislation with liberal Democrats, and voted to expand the size of the federal government.?

?Between his vote to create the Department of Education in 1979, to his vote for the TARP bailout in 2008, Hatch has consistently voted to expand government beyond its Constitutional limitations,? Kibbe said. ?At the end of the day, our Utah activists have been asking us: Why settle for an Orrin Hatch, when you can have another Mike Lee??

That kind of thing rankles Hatch, who calls FreedomWorks ?the sleaziest bunch I?ve ever seen in my life.??That was at the lone pre-primary debate 10 days ago.

Hatch plays up his experience and seniority, which Liljenquist says is the problem.

?Do you consider yourself responsible in any way for the national debt that has exploded in your time in Washington?? he asked Hatch during their radio encounter.

?That is fiscal child abuse and that?s what?s happened in this Congress under your watch as you?ve voted over and over to raise the debt ceiling,? Liljenquist said. ?That is a tax increase, that you?ve deferred on a whole generation of Americans.?

The normally unflappable Hatch flapped at that. ?Apparently I?m responsible for everything that?s wrong in the federal government,? he said. ?That?s total BS and everybody knows it.?
?
Going into Tuesday?s primary election, Hatch appears to have the clear advantage despite Liljenquist?s and the tea party?s efforts. He?s way ahead in the polls ? 60-32 percent, according to a new Deseret News/KSL-TV poll. And he has the endorsement of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and ? perhaps even more valuable ? the blessing of Sarah Palin.

?Republican voters aren't quite ready to turn the old war horse out to pasture,? Republican political consultant and lobbyist LaVarr Webb told the Deseret News in Salt Lake City. ?A Hatch win means that it's safe, once again, to be a mainstream Republican in Utah.?

Still, one thing is certain, Wall Street Journal editorial board member Steven Moore wrote the other day: ?Every incumbent Republican senator will be watching Utah with fear and trepidation on Tuesday. Elections like this keep Republicans from straying too far away from the limited-government principles that GOP voters are demanding.?

How much do you know about the Tea Party? A quiz.

Jordin Sparks Weight Loss: Health and fitness for all times

gre02e86po2a Posted by gre02e86po2a on 13 hours ago

Conditioning is becoming these days one of many hottest procedures of physical teaching, having now all the rights to claim the standing of mass sports activity. The word originates from English and it crossed more than all linguistic barriers, staying translated as ?physical shape?, ?physical state?, ?general bodily training?, ?health state?, and so on.

Deriving from adult females human body establishing, which was shedding its reputation, physical fitness has lately come to be an official sports activity. Like a overall performance sport, fitness demands specific native traits, like every other competitional sport. Essentially the most essential features are: a well balanced bone construction, ectomorf or mesomorf somatic kind, skills, velocity. For anyone less familiarized with contests during this sports activity, we mention that in females opposition you?ll find a few activities: night gown, swimming suit and a flooring gymnastics system.

Coming back to mass health, we have to specify that, into a excellent extent, its acceptance is due to its accessibility. To start with, the approaches employed in health and fitness have been mostly adopted from entire body building, but then they began to differentiate progressively more from individuals on the other sports.
