(AP) ? Iran's supreme leader said Friday that developing nations have a greater right than the U.S. or NATO to intervene in Syria, signaling an effort to lead a diplomatic push over efforts to resolve the crisis.

The comments came a day after Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi embarrassed the Islamic Republic by blasting its ally, Syria, during a speech at the summit of the Nonaligned Movement, a grouping of some 120 nations.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei met Friday with Syria's prime minister, Wael Nader al-Halqi, and Damascus' delegation to the conference.

"There is a proxy war against the Syrian government, on behalf of some governments led by the U.S. and some other powers with the objective of meeting the Zionist regime's (Israeli) interests and inflicting a blow to resistance in the region," Khamenei was quoted as saying on his website.

He didn't mention Egypt. But Iran's former ambassador to Syria, Hossein Sheikholeslam, openly criticized Morsi, saying the Islamist leader had demonstrated "lack of political maturity" with his comments.

Morsi ? in the first visit to Iran by an Egyptian leader since the 1979 Islamic Revolution ? on Thursday called the Syrian regime "oppressive" and said the world must stand behind the Syrian rebels. That prompted a walkout by Syrian delegates to the conference.

Sheikholeslam said Morsi "made a big mistake" by condemning the Syrian government in his speech, according to the semiofficial Mehr news agency

Iran sought to use the weeklong summit to assert itself on the Syrian crisis and to counter Western efforts to isolate Tehran over its nuclear program. The U.S. and its allies say Iran is trying to develop atomic weapons, but Iran denies the claims and says its program is for peaceful purposes.

The final summit declaration issued Friday said all countries had the right to development and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. It notably singled out Iran.

The statement made no mention of Syria's civil war, reflecting the huge differences among the nonaligned member states and their failure to narrow the gaps.

Tehran has faced an uphill challenge in garnering support for Syrian President Bashar Assad. Some in the organization ? particularly Sunni Muslim majority nations ? are more sympathetic with the rebels, if not outright backing them.

The U.N. and Arab League have both led ultimately failed efforts to negotiate an end to Syria's violence, in which thousands have been killed since early 2011. Turkey this week called for the U.N. to authorize creation of a safe zone in Syria for tens of thousands fleeing their homes. Britain and France have left open the possibility of more aggressive action, including a military-enforced no-fly zone to protect a safe area ? though that still seems a remote possibility.

"The Nonaligned Movement definitely has more political right than the U.S., NATO or some European countries to intervene in the Syrian issue," Khamenei said. He did not elaborate on what kind of role the group should have.

But the Nonaligned Movement, an organization formed in the Cold War as an alternative to both the Soviet and U.S. blocs, has little cohesiveness or international weight now to push a Syria initiative. And its members are divided over Syria.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Friday complained that some nonaligned member states arm the rebels.

"Unfortunately, some regional countries, that are also members of the nonaligned movement, are providing weapons and military training as well as money to the armed groups to destroy Syria's infrastructure," he told Iranian state TV Friday.

Al-Moallem didn't name any country but last month he openly accused regional powerhouses Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of trying to destroy Syria by supporting the rebels.

Iran, Syria's key remaining ally in the Middle East, has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years, and has kept up its strong support for the regime since the uprising began in March 2011. Syrian activists say at least 20,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Tehran has urged Damascus to listen to the Syrian people's "legitimate demands" but has strongly opposed shipment of weapons to the rebels.

"The main culprits in the Syrian issue are those who have paved the way for flooding shipments of arms into Syria as well as financial support for the irresponsible groups," state TV quoted Khamenei as saying Friday. "The Syrian government should remove excuses from the opponents, continue political reforms and expose behind-the-curtain facts for the Arab public opinion."

Iran has already proposed a three-month cease-fire to pave the way for national reconciliation talks between the Syrian government and the opponents.

Anti-regime fighters have dismissed any role for Iran in such a plan. The rebels say it has little hope of succeeding. Also, the United States has rejected Iranian participation in international meetings on the Syrian crisis.

Iran also has been seeking to win support from the bloc, accounting for nearly two-thirds of U.N. member states, for its nuclear program. Tehran has used the summit to try to show that U.S.-led efforts to isolate it have failed.

The final summit declaration said all countries should be able to exercise their "inalienable right to development, research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without prejudice" and in accordance with the relevant legal obligations.

"The decision and choice of states, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, in the field of peaceful use of nuclear technology and their policies in the field of the fuel cycle has to be respected," it said.

It also condemned unilateral economic sanctions, a clear reference to U.S.-led punitive measures against Iran over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment.

The declaration was approved a day after the U.N. nuclear watchdog said Iran has effectively shut down a probe of Parchin military site in southeast Tehran where Iran is suspected of carrying out explosive tests related to a nuclear weapon trigger.

The head coach of Rich Central High School?s girls varsity basketball team has been placed on paid administrative leave after writing a self-published book in which he describes in graphic detail his opinion on the vaginal differences between women of different races and says, ?the easiest kill for a man is through the young lady with low self-esteem.?

Rich Township High School District 227 Supt. Donna Simpson Leak said that school administrators have put the coach, who has tenure status, on leave pending a district review.

Head coach Bryan Craig, who also is a counselor at the Olympia Fields school, wrote various sexually explicit passages in his self-help book, ?It?s Her Fault,? which he published in July. Craig says he moonlights as a bouncer at an area strip club.

The book, which was edited by another teacher at the school, was written to give women the, ?upper hand in a relationship,? according to the foreword.

?The easiest kill for a man is through the young lady with low self-esteem,? Craig wrote in the book. ?Of course some will feel this is taking advantage, and yes it is. The ultimate goal for a man is to do all he can to eventually be able to commit and submit to a woman?s power.?

The book is available online in paper and electronic formats.

When reached by phone this week, Craig declined comment.

?He has his constitutional right to free speech,? Leak said on Thursday night before the decision was made to put Craig on leave. ?We are concerned, we don?t condone what?s in his book, and we are monitoring it so this doesn?t create a situation at the school.?

Board president Betty Owens blasted Craig?s book and said the matter is under investigation.

?It?s distasteful, it?s inappropriate, and it wouldn?t be on my list of things to read,? Owens said.

Last year Craig, who has led the school?s varsity girls basketball program since 2008, got into trouble with the IHSA after playing an ineligible transfer student. As a result, the team forfeited a majority of its regular-season wins.

Craig cites his experience at Rich Central in the book?s foreword, writing that he has spent most of his life ?surrounded by women.?

?I coach girls basketball, work in an office where I am the only male counselor, and am responsible for roughly 425 high school students a year, about half of whom are females,? Craig writes. ?Suffice it to say, I have spent a considerable amount of time around, and with, the fairer sex.?

Whether it was working as a mental health counselor at Mount Sinai Health Center in Chicago or with the Illinois Department of Children Family Services, he repeatedly told women they could control their relationships, Craig wrote. The point of the book, Craig wrote, is to give women a ?road map to having the upper hand in a relationship with a man.?

Craig wrote about his side gig doing security at ?a very popular gentlemen?s club in Chicago.? Working there, he wrote, allows him to let off steam, manage anger and irritation, and ?be nicer to my wife.?

Men at the strip club spend hundreds of one-dollar bills on strippers who whisper, ?I love you,? in their ears, he wrote.

?In some cases, strippers and dancers show the overall dominance a woman can have over a man,? Craig wrote. ?Not to say that stripping is what has to be done to truly establish dominance, but these women?s mind set is in the right place in order to meet the true potential of the point of this book.?

All men and women should be sexually promiscuous before getting married, Craig wrote. He wrote that women should experiment with penis sizes and men should ?understand the variation of the vagina.? He describes in graphic detail what he perceives to be the difference in vaginas of women from various races and ethnicities.

Craig also addresses his own sexual faults. And gets personal, writing that a woman he loved in college got pregnant, miscarried the child, and then told him she was cheating on him.

?From that moment forward, I vowed to never be put in that situation, and to mind-f--- every woman I could,? Craig wrote.

He then describes a method that allows women to juggle five different partners at once. He describes the strategy as ?the A through E:? your admirer, your ultimate admirer, your counselor, your sexual release, your ideal.

?And yes, you can have more than one (sexual release), just be careful, this one could kill you,? Craig wrote.

In the final chapter, Craig encourages readers to enter the ?wonderful world of submissiveness.?

?He?s your man, go ahead and let him turn you every which way, let him touch your hair if he asks, real or not,? Craig wrote. ?Give him oral sex without making the ?ugh? face.?

Craig also warns against telling people too many personal details.

?Speaking of business, our biggest downfall in relationships is sharing too much information with friends or associates,? Craig said. ?In general, (read it slowly) people do not want the best for you. This is why people watch race car driving: hoping to see some one crash.?

Detroit has lost the first two games of this series and it cannot afford to get swept by the Royals tonight. The Tigers trail Chicago by three games in the American League Central with a three-game home series starting tomorrow against the White Sox and they need to head in there with some momentum. Detroit had won seven of the first eight meetings this year against Kansas City and the Tigers are now still 21-8 in their last 29 games against teams with a losing record. Rick Porcello looks to stop the bleeding and while his year has been pretty up and down, he is coming off consecutive quality outings for the first time since the end of June. He tossed a quality start in his only game against the Royals this season and in two trips to Kansas City last year, he posted a 3.09 ERA. The Royals are riding that two-game winning streak and they have now won five straight games at home while going 8-1 over their last nine at Kaufman Stadium. This is actually helping us out with the price and it is hard to overlook the fact that Kansas City is still five games under .500 at home on the season. Jeremy Guthrie was absolutely horrible at the end of his Colorado stint and the start of his time for the Tigers but he then tossed four straight quality starts to begin August including the final three where he allowed no runs. It was not long lasting as he was tagged for seven runs in just 2.2 innings against the Red Sox last time out. Guthrie is 0-2 with a 7.98 ERA in his last three starts against Detroit. (969) Detroit Tigers

(AP) ? Twin typhoons are renewing fears of a humanitarian crisis in North Korea, where poor drainage, widespread deforestation and crumbling infrastructure can turn even a routine rainstorm into a catastrophic flood.

Typhoon Bolaven struck the North on Tuesday and Wednesday, submerging houses and roads, ruining thousands of acres of crops and triggering landslides that buried train tracks ? scenes that are all too familiar in this disaster-prone nation. A second major storm, Typhoon Tembin, pounded the Korean Peninsula with more rains Thursday.

The storms come as North Korea is still recovering from earlier floods that killed more than 170 people and destroyed thousands of homes. That in turn followed a springtime drought that was the worst in a century in some areas.

Foreign aid groups contacted Thursday said they are standing by in Pyongyang, but had not received new requests for help from the North Korean government. They had little information on the extent of damage and were relying on reports from state media. The country's wariness toward the outside world, as well as a primitive rural road system, means aid may be slow arriving, if it is allowed to come at all.

"These fresh storms, coming just a few weeks after the serious flooding ? they do raise concerns because we see parts of the countryside battered again that have already been left in a vulnerable state," said Francis Markus, spokesman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in East Asia.

Tembin's strong winds and hard rain were pounding South Korea on Thursday, as residents of some cities waded through streets flooded with murky, knee-deep water. The national weather agency in Seoul said the storm would move off the peninsula's east coast and that some cities in North Korea would see severe weather conditions.

There were no deaths reported from Tembin. The earlier storm, Bolaven, left 20 people dead or missing in South Korea. It killed three people and left 3,300 people homeless in North Korea, the country's official media reported.

Downpours trigger landslides that barrel down the North's deforested mountains. For years, rural people have felled trees to grow crops and for fuel, leaving the landscape barren and heavily eroded. Rivers overflow, submerging crops, inundating roads and engulfing hamlets.

Since June, thousands have been left without clean water, electricity and access to food and other supplies. That leads to a risk of water-borne and respiratory diseases and malnutrition, aid workers say.

Because the North annually struggles to produce enough food from its rocky, mountainous landscape to feed its 24 million people, a poorly timed natural disaster can easily tip the country into crisis, like the famine in the 1990s that followed a similar succession of devastating storms.

A North Korean land management official acknowledged in an interview with The Associated Press that widespread deforestation and a lack of basic infrastructure have made the country vulnerable to the typhoons and storms that batter the peninsula each year.

"It's important for the future of our children to make our country rich and beautiful," Ri Song Il, director of external affairs for the Ministry of Land and Environmental Protection, said in June.

He said a campaign is under way to replenish forests, build highways and construct proper irrigation at the order of North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong Un. He held up a green pamphlet on land management that was the first official document Kim published after taking power from his father.

But it may be too little, too late, for this year's summer rains.

In Pyongyang, North Korea's showcase capital of grand monuments and broad boulevards, the rains have been little more than a nuisance for residents tromping about in rubber boots and umbrellas.

Outside the capital, it's a different story.

In villages without the luxury of paved roads, summer downpours have sliced through roadways and washed away bridges, all but cutting off already isolated communities from supplies, food and help.

Two weeks ago, AP journalists visited a flood-ravaged mining hamlet in South Phyongan province where gushing waters from an earlier storm swallowed a whole block of homes. The trip, a mere 40-mile (60-kilometer) drive northeast of Pyongyang, required a bumpy four-hour ride along rutted, muddy roads.

Along the way, workers piled stones along the roadside as a bulwark against landslides, but they were no match for the water rushing down mountainsides.

Villagers crouched in makeshift lean-tos and camped on the rubble where their houses once stood. They vowed to rebuild once the roads are restored and trucks can cart in cement. But there are concerns about how vulnerable their new homes would be if they rebuild at the foot of a mountain in the county of Songchon, which means "place where many waters come together."

North Korea has no clear long-term strategy to deal with disasters or climate change, the United Nations said in a report issued in June.

This year, North Korea is at a particularly dangerous juncture, said the Red Cross' Markus. Over the last two years, he said, "we've been seeing a gradual deterioration in the humanitarian situation."

The Red Cross works with villagers to prepare evacuation plans and other ways to protect themselves, their homes and their farmland in the event of a disaster, he said.

But severe weather remains an omnipresent threat, and poor infrastructure and massive deforestation are "a major factor in exacerbating these weather events," he said. "There's no doubt that the vulnerabilities in the countryside are considerable."

Live from Samsung Unpacked at IFA 2012!

Judging from the rows and rows of Samsung flag lining the outside the Messe Berlin, the company's planning another big show for this year's IFA. This time last year, the company took the wraps off of its industry-shaping Galaxy Note, and if all goes according to plan, there's seems a fairly significant chance that 2012 will see a sequel. And, knowing Samsung, that's not all we're in store for today. Hold on tight and join us after the break.

Reddit is getting a fundraising button

22 hrs.

Being ?the front page of the Internet? comes with power, and Redditors have often, if not a bit spontaneously, channeled that power for fundraising.

Among their good deeds: giving a bullied senior citizen bus monitor a $700,000 vacation budget, scrounging up $31,000 overnight to help a three-year-old who needed a bone marrow transplant, and contributing more than $180,000 to Haiti earthquake relief efforts.

Now, for the first time, Reddit users will be able to execute some of these fundraisers within Reddit-branded pages.

Starting today, managers of the site's topic pages, or Subreddits, can opt to accept donations to specific nonprofits by installing new "Donate" buttons on their Subreddit pages. The TwoXChromosomes Subreddit, for instance, will add a button to support She's the First, an organization that supports girls' education in the developing world.

The buttons and the donation system they're attached to, Reddit Donate, were developed by payment startup Dwolla in partnership with another payment startup called Stripe. It will launch with 12 nonprofit partners, including Kiva, Charity: Water, and DonorsChoose.?

Many Subreddits are already active fundraisers. The atheism Subreddit, for instance, helped raise more than $200,000 for Doctors Without Boarders by directing traffic to a third-party fundraising page.

Without a Reddit tool for accepting donations, most fundraising Redditors have, like the athiest group, pointed each other to crowd funding sites such as Indiegogo, independent funding sites, and custom landing pages on charities' websites to contribute.

At times it can be unclear, however, where the money is actually going. Money raised for the bullied bus monitor's vacation, for instance, was collected on an Indiegogo page that was not set up in her name, but a Redditor's name. If a less scrupulous person had created the page, the story may have lost its happy ending.

?We want to protect our community, and for it to know that if it donates $100, that it's going to the right person and not to various fees,? Erik Martin, the general manager of Reddit, tells Fast Company.

Dwolla removes credit card numbers from transactions--and with them a handful of third-party financial-service providers?-and thus is able to charge an impressively low fee of $.25 for transactions more than $10 (transactions involving less than that are free). Money travels directly from donors' bank accounts to nonprofits' bank accounts. Stripe keeps the credit card in the process and charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.?

Reddit has taken other steps to support charitable efforts initiated in its site, but none so significant.

Earlier this month, the site named Crowdtilt its official fundraising partner. A newly-launched startup, Crowdtilt enables anyone to raise money for any kind of project, and it promised Reddit to wave fees and verify that donated money ends up where it is intended.

It's difficult to verify how organizations that aren't registered nonprofits are spending their money, so the Dwolla and Stripe button only applies to nonprofit partners for now. That leaves out the individual-specific causes Reddit is famous for supporting.

Ben Milne, the CEO of Dwolla, tells Fast Company that if Redditors embrace it, there's likely room for the project to evolve. For now, the new feature formalizes a giving habit that has already become part of Reddit's reputation.

?It?s just like anyone could always raise money for their project," says Milne, "but it got way easier when Kickstarter launched.??

Blunt Christie tells Republicans it's time to face fiscal truth

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie accused Democrats of refusing to tell Americans the truth about the depth of the country's deep fiscal woes on Tuesday in a pugnacious keynote speech in support of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Christie delivered the main speech of the evening at the Republican National Convention. The rotund, combative governor drew sustained applause from the thousands of delegates who gathered to formally nominate Romney as their candidate to face Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

Christie, a popular surrogate for Romney who had been on his short list of potential vice presidential running mates, had tough words for Obama and other Democrats.

"They believe that the American people don't want to hear the truth about the extent of our fiscal difficulties ... and need to be coddled by big government," Christie said. "They believe the American people are content to live the lie with them."

Christie, known in part for seeking to curb government spending by reducing the influence of teachers' unions in New Jersey, joined other Republicans in calling for an overhaul of federal entitlement programs such as Medicare, the health insurance plan for seniors, that are driving much of America's debt problem.

Democrats have attacked Romney's vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, for proposing a plan in the U.S. Congress to change Medicare, the government health insurance plan for seniors, for Americans under age 55 in order to save money.

"Tonight, our duty is to tell the American people the truth," said Christie, whose effectiveness as an economic messenger has been undercut recently by a slumping New Jersey economy that has shed jobs and now has the fourth-highest unemployment rate among U.S. states - which at 9.8 percent tops the national average of 8.3 percent.

"Our problems are big and the solutions will not be painless," Christie said. "We all must share in the sacrifice. Any leader that tells us differently is simply not telling the truth."

Christie suggested that Obama is more interested in being popular than in making tough decisions.

"There's only one thing missing now: leadership. It takes leadership that you don't get from reading a poll," he said. "You see, Mr. President, real leaders don't follow polls. Real leaders change polls." (Editing by David Lindsey and Leslie Adler)

Google wants to expand its mobile payments app, Google Wallet, to include more than just credit card transactions.?

In a YouTube Q&A session, Google Wallet's product manager Robin Dua said the app will eventually evolve to let you store your gift cards, boarding passes, concert tickets, etc.?

MobileBurn first picked up Dua's interview.

The concept is nearly identical to Apple's upcoming Passbook app, which was announced in June.

Passbook will ship with iOS 6, the next operating system for iPhones and iPads, this fall. While Passbook won't let you make credit card payments with your iPhone, many speculate the app is Apple's first step into mobile payments.

Google says Apple's legal victory doesn't relate to Android ...

Google hinted today that it will likely be unaffected by Samsung?s court loss to Apple over patents related to the iPhone?s design. Samsung?s stock has taken a hit today as it will have to pay $1.05 billion for violating Apple?s patents, based on a jury ruling on Friday. Google supplies the core Android operating system for Samsung?s smartphones and tablets.

But Google said that the claims involved in the patent case don?t relate to the core software. But if Samsung is forced to stop selling its smartphones and tablets in the U.S., as Apple is expected to request, the number of Android shipments could suffer.

Google said, ?The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don?t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players ? including newcomers ? are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don?t want anything to limit that.?

MOSCOW (AP) ? Three members of the Pussy Riot punk band have appealed a court's decision to jail them for two years for their "punk prayer" against Russian leader Vladimir Putin in a Moscow cathedral, their lawyer said Monday.

The stunt angered Russia's dominant Orthodox Church, but the women's trial and punishment also upset human rights activists and others who accused the Kremlin and the Church of orchestrating the trial amid a crackdown on Putin's critics.

Protests supporting the women have been held in many countries, and celebrities such as Paul McCartney have called for their release.

The women were arrested and put on trial after their unauthorized performance at Moscow's Christ the Savior cathedral in February, during which they called on the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from Putin. The Russian leader faces growing opposition, and he has increasingly cracked down on critics since returning to the presidency in May.

The women were sentenced on Aug. 17, and their lawyer Violetta Volkova said the appeal was submitted to the Khamovniki district court on Monday. A decision is expected within 10 days. Meanwhile, the band has said that at least two of its members have fled Russia to avoid arrest.

Also Monday, Orthodox Church leaders condemned the chopping down of wooden crosses in Russia and neighboring Ukraine by people claiming to support Pussy Riot.

In mid-August, the controversial Ukrainian group Femen, whose topless members stage pranks to support women's rights, cut down a massive Orthodox cross in Kiev to protest the band members' conviction. Four more crosses were cut down in the northern Russian region of Archangelsk and the Urals region of Chelyabinsk over the weekend.

Church spokesman Vladimir Legoida said that the vandals "taunt" Russian culture and history.

Pussy Riot manager Pyotr Verzilov said last week that the band disapproved of damaging crosses.

Iran urges developing nations at summit to oppose sanctions

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's foreign minister urged delegates at a Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) developing nations summit on Sunday to oppose sanctions imposed by the West on the Islamic Republic to punish it for its nuclear activities.

Western diplomats have sought to play down the importance of NAM at the start of Iran's three-year presidency of the body set up in 1961 to counter big power domination of international relations.

However, Iran welcomed delegates from the group of 120 developing nations to the meeting it says proves that Washington has failed to isolate it from the rest of the world.

"The non-aligned (movement) must seriously oppose ... unilateral economic sanctions which have been enacted by certain countries against non-aligned countries," Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told the summit's opening session.

The West accuses Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran denies this and says its nuclear research is for civilian purposes but refuses to curb its nuclear enrichment program.

HIGH SECURITY

Police and security unit have flooded Tehran for the NAM meeting amid warnings to opposition activists against rekindling protests which brought millions into the streets in 2009 against the re-election of hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Eighty countries are participating in the summit at the level of minister or higher, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said, with 50 sending their heads of government.

And the expected attendance of big players including U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Egypt's new president, Mohammad Mursi - the first Egyptian leader to visit Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution - will give the meeting diplomatic heft.

Since the toppling of Egypt's Western-backed President Hosni Mubarak last year, non-Arab Iran has hoped for a thaw in relations with the regional power, but Cairo has appeared less eager to embrace Shi'ite Muslim Iran which is viewed with suspicion by its Sunni Gulf Arab neighbours.

"The presence of the Egyptian president in Tehran will help develop Tehran-Cairo relations," Mehmanparast told reporters.

With the Syrian crisis likely to dominate talks, Iran's support for President Bashar al-Assad, who is using heavy weaponry against an uprising that threatens to have repercussions around the region, is likely to face scrutiny.

Mehmanparast said Iran expected to consult with countries on the sidelines of the summit on a "comprehensive package" to resolve the Syria crisis.

In a possible sign of things to come, a senior official presiding over Sunday's talks, Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh, indicated discussions had thrown up disagreements but that Iran and Qatar had helped to resolve differences of opinion, Fars news agency said.

The final report from meetings at official level will be finished on Tuesday and will form the basis of discussions between foreign ministers and heads of state later in the week.

Divisions within the Muslim Middle East were also evident when Tehran moved to deny media reports that it had invited Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip.

"From Palestine, only Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, has been invited to Tehran for participation in this summit, and an official invitation has not been sent to any other individual," Mehr news agency quoted Mehmanparast as saying.

Tehran has declared a five-day holiday in the capital to ease traffic pressures and enhance security, which is being guaranteed by hundreds of police units.

"Police are stopping a lot of people in the streets and are standing on every corner," said a 30-year-old Tehran resident who asked not to be named. Another resident said there were unprecedented numbers of stop-and-search teams.

Conservative cleric Ahmad Khatami, in an interview published last week, warned opposition supporters against using the summit for their own aims.

An opposition group based outside the country has asked U.N. chief Ban to ask to meet opposition leaders Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi who have been held under house arrest since February 2011 as the Arab Spring uprisings raged in the Middle East.

(AP) ? The Baltimore Ravens probably wouldn't mind if the regular season began a week from Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, on the other hand, need all the time they can get before playing games that really count.

Joe Flacco passed for 266 yards and two touchdowns, and Baltimore received a strong performance from its defense in a 48-17 rout Thursday night.

Coming off a 27-12 defeat against the Detroit Lions, the Ravens were focused on scoring touchdowns instead of field goals and rectifying a defensive unit that was scorched for 507 yards.

They accomplished both goals with a solid showing against the previously unbeaten Jaguars.

"We're putting it all together now," Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb said.

Same with the offense. Flacco completed 27 of 36 passes before leaving early in the third quarter. Most important, he put two touchdowns on the board instead of settling for field goals.

"If this was a regular-season game, we would have come out (feeling) pretty good about it," he said.

The Jaguars had very few feel-good moments in a humbling defeat that came on the heels of wins over the New York Giants and New Orleans.

"How we respond from this will be the test of this football team," coach Mike Mularkey said. "It's like being punched in the mouth. In all three phases, we just didn't give ourselves a chance to compete the way we did in the first two games."

Baltimore amassed 571 yards in total offense and had five drives of at least 80 yards. The 48 points were the most ever scored by the Ravens in a preseason game.

With support from a defense that kept Jacksonville quarterback Blaine Gabbert in check, the Ravens (No. 5 in the AP Pro32) built a 20-3 lead before Flacco took a seat.

Gabbert went 11 for 21 for 117 yards over three quarters, and Rashad Jennings, starting in place of holdout Maurice Jones-Drew, gained 57 yards on 13 carries.

"I'm not pleased at all in my game tonight. I left a lot of yards out on the football field," Jennings said.

Jennings wasn't the only Jacksonville player to express disappointment after the blowout.

"Maybe that is what we needed, to have that bad a feeling, even in a preseason game," Mularkey said. "This is why we play exhibition games. This will be a true test of this team to see how we bounce back from this. I am anxious to see how this team responds after getting pounded like we did. In all three phases, we didn't do the things we needed to do."

Jacksonville cornerback Rashean Mathis played for the first time this summer following knee surgery, but Jaguars cornerback Aaron Ross was forced from the game with an ankle injury and tight end Zach Miller left in the second quarter with an injured leg.

Fortunately, the Jaguars still have one preseason game left before the opener against Minnesota.

"You can't go into the season feeling the way we do now," Gabbert said. "This one leaves a nasty, nasty taste in your mouth. You never want to lose a game like this, even if it isn't the regular season."

Against the Giants and Saints, Gabbert drove the Jaguars (2-1) to a touchdown on their opening possession. In this one, Jacksonville started on its own 5 after a Ravens punt and made only one first down ? on a 16-yard completion to first-round draft pick Justin Blackmon ? before kicking the ball away.

Ray Rice began the subsequent drive with a 28-yard run, but the march stalled inside the 10 before rookie Justin Tucker kicked a 33-yard field goal. It was an unfulfilling score for the Ravens (2-1), who were intent upon improving their inability to get touchdowns when inside the 20.

That shortcoming would be resolved in Baltimore's third drive. Flacco went 8 for 9 for 87 yards and made it 10-0 with a touchdown throw to Anquan Boldin.

The march started with a 16-yard pass to Smith, who came up limping but returned later in the series and caught a key third-down pass. Smith missed last week's game with a sprained ankle.

Following another Jacksonville punt, Flacco went 5 for 5 on a 30-yard drive that ended with a 53-yard field goal by Tucker. In his effort to take the job from incumbent Billy Cundiff, Tucker has made all five of his field goal tries this preseason, including two from beyond 50 yards.

Gabbert finally got the Jaguars rolling late in the half, directing a 12-play, 73-yard march that produced a field goal with 56 seconds remaining.

On their first possession of the second half, the Ravens moved 80 yards to take a 20-3 lead. Flacco went 7 for 9 for 70 yards, completing passes of 7, 32 and 8 yards to Smith before concluding his night with a TD toss to Leach.

The Best Business Investment And Government Policy In This ...

The Best Business Investment And Government Policy In This Recession
A severe recession has set in, particularly in the developed half of the world. Nobody is sure how long it will last. The recession has left many persons in debt and jobless. For such persons its time to require exhausting decisions, like moving out of their homes by renting, selling, foreclosure or filing bankruptcy. However, there are others who may have lost their jobs or are in concern of losing it but stay in positive territory as so much as their money assets are concerned i.e. they are doing not owe banks more than the price of their savings, price of property, and any alternative assets. These are the lucky ones, however such persons may be wondering as to the simplest attainable investments and business opportunities in these arduous economic times so on secure their future.

The safest investment, especially in unsure economic times appears to be gold or silver. In this regards gold or silver as bank issued bullion or coins is the route to travel instead of jewellery that entails a loss both at the time of purchase and sale. It can not be readily valued or liquidated when the need arises. The safest place to store gold when purchased is maybe in an exceedingly hole within the bottom on one?s own property provided it can be secured with care and no one else is created a party to the secret. The following best investment is agricultural land provided one will put it to productive use.

Agricultural activity goes on even within the worst of recessions as a result of folks must eat. Besides the actual fact that a farm can provide shelter and food, it?s secure from the worst potential downturn. Moreover, it provides the chance for a healthy lifestyle shut to nature. A farm can give shelter and occupation not simply for the owner however additionally for the entire family, as well as grown up children who could loose their jobs or homes in a very city at some time in the close to future. Manufacturing food conjointly leads to the satisfaction that one is making a positive contribution to the planet as compared to a manufactured product like a cosmetic that adds no real price to life.

Living shut to nature will be a pleasant amendment if one can afford it and create an outright purchase of irrigated agricultural land. It makes smart economic sense to accumulate a small farm of even five or ten acres. Persons with massive farm holding could readily comply with sell of small parts of their property so as to raise funds for investments on their larger holdings and the chance of good company in their neighborhood. However, infrastructure prices will be steep in starting a replacement agricultural venture. It?d be an error to satisfy such costs by obtaining into debt. That may most likely be a move from the frying pan into the fire. However for a new small farmer who will take it simple and avoid obtaining into debt, the move will flip out to be a good one over a amount of time. There is heaps that may be done on a small farm ? poultry, fish farming, orchards, timber farming, mushroom growing, wine and cheese making, bee keeping besides growing vegetables, flowers and corn or wheat. Membership of a country club and collaborating in the farmers market will offer quality social interaction. Besides, one will generate employment for other younger persons hired to assist on the farm by providing them with board and lodgings and a modest salary.

For those that have the money and aptitude for acquiring agricultural property and living on a farm this could be the proper time to liquidate their urban assets and build the move. For governments seized with generating employment and shelter it can be a positive policy move if they assist such ventures through policy initiatives and even financial investments in the associated infrastructure. It?s higher than building a highway or bridge to nowhere and can manufacture quicker results. The economic activity of the past century has resulted in the enlargement of urban areas. We currently have polluted cities that are bursting at their seams. It is time now for the expansion of rural areas and villages in an exceedingly new phase of human civilization that this recession may be leading to. The widespread prevalence of mobile telephony and therefore the Internet can make the change a feasible and enlightened one.

Apple, Samsung Patent Case Will Test Jury

With so much technical and legal jargon to parse, I suspect most jurors will vote with their gut.

The jury on the Apple case has to digest a dizzying amount of technical and legal details. There are three different classes of patents being discussed: utility/technical, design, and trade dress?basically how a product looks. Jurors sat through more than 50 hours of testimony, including listening to 109 pages of jury instructions. The judge even mandated "stand up breaks" to keep the jury alert. Now, that jury just needs to decide, essentially, if Samsung will continue to sell phones and tablets in the United States.

With so much technical and legal jargon to parse, in the end, I suspect most jurors will vote with their gut. In their closing remarks, both sides made passionate, if over-simplified, arguments designed to appeal to the jurors' common sense. Indeed, evidence aside, the entire trial comes down to which of the following statements you are more likely to agree with:

Samsung's lawyer Charles Verhoeven contends, "Rather than compete in the marketplace, Apple is seeking to gain an edge in the courtroom. It's seeking to block its biggest and most serious competitor from even attending thegame."

Or:

Apple's attorney Harold McElhinny argues, "They sat with the iPhone and went feature by feature, copying it to the smallest detail. In those critical three months, Samsung was able to copy and incorporate the core part of Apple's four-year investment without taking any of the risks, because they were copying the world's most successful product."

After the trial, it will be interesting to see how much the evidence changed jurors' opinions and how much of their judgment was formed in advance. I'm not dismissing the American judicial process, but I follow technology for a living, and even I found the legal and technical details here arcane.

On its face, you might think the two giant tech firms could just split the difference, rather than risk a jury decision. After all, these guys are still business partners. Samsung makes 26 percent of all the components used in the iPhone. And yet, Apple is asking for at least $2.5 billion in damages.

A large number, to be sure, but so is the number of Samsung devices that Apple considers to be infringing on its patents. According to Apple, Samsung has sold 22.7 million infringing phones and tablets in the Unites States. Given the way the Galaxy Tab has fared, I think it is safe to say the vast majority of those were phones. The revenue from these sales is estimated to be $8.16 billion and Apple wants its cut.

By contrast, Samsung is countersuing for a measly $422 million, based largely on technical patents that it licenses widely to almost all cell phone manufacturers. In the course of the trial, these patents have served mostly to muck up the case. Valuing these technical patents is tricky, but it seems clear that Apple will have to pay something for them. For the most part, however, Samsung's patents are just here to balance out Apple claims. The real story is in Apple's broad design patents hold.

There is more at stake here for Samsung than for Apple, and money has very little to do with it. Apple doesn't need the money. It is sitting on the biggest pile of cash in corporate America and the world's biggest market cap to go with it. Apple wants to own the form factor. There is no question its iPhone revolutionized smartphone design and its iPad single-handedly created the consumer tablet market. Credit is undoubtedly due.

The questions now could test any patent or legal expert. What exactly does Apple own? Do consumers really confuse the Galaxy S II with the iPhone 4? And what will happen to the smartphone and tablet markets if Apple's claims are granted? Nine jurors in Silicon Valley are in the weeds trying to answer these questions right now.

And remember, the decision must be unanimous. Can we just skip this decision and move right to the appeal?
