Fall Semester: creating a cozy home for the cooler season ...

Fall is such a nostalgic time of year. I love welcoming back my cozy sweaters and favourite boots. Thanksgiving celebrations with family and of course visits to the pumpkin patch just as we did with our parents as children. Football games and the Royal Winter Fair. We can also feather our nests with wool, velvet and tartan. There is such luxury in harvest inspired hues like cranberry and pumpkin, hunter greens and gray flannel. Nothing is more decadent than coming in from a crisp walk in the woods with my family to a warm cup of cider and getting settled with a book or board games in front of a roaring fire. I?m looking forward to raking those leaves already!

Britain's Debenhams, ASOS buck retail gloom

LONDON (Reuters) - British retailers Debenhams and ASOS laid out plans to deliver future growth overseas as their rising profits showed their resilience to weaker home market conditions.

Both Debenhams, Britain's No. 2 department store group, and ASOS, the fast-growing online fashion retailer, have bucked the gloomy trend in the sector, dogged by weak consumer confidence.

Shares in Debenhams, up 59 percent over the last year, rose 6 percent after it increased its target for online sales to 600 million pounds ($961.8 million) from 500 million through the next three to five years.

The group also upped its target for overseas franchise stores from 130 to 150, with a focus on new openings in the Middle East and Asia.

Debenhams currently trades from about 170 stores in Britain, Ireland and Denmark, and 71 overseas franchise stores.

The group, which ranks behind rival John Lewis in terms of annual sales, also posted a 4.2 percent increase in full-year pretax profit to 158.3 million pounds, against a forecast 157.5 million, driven by its breadth of products, appeal to a range of customers and multiple routes to market.

Yet the company did not see any general upturn in the sector, where Argos parent Home Retail for example has just posted an 18 percent drop in first-half underlying pretax profit and is closing stores.

"We've seen no significant change in consumer confidence in the last six to nine months and customers are acclimatizing to what life is like in these challenging economic times," said Chief Executive Michael Sharp.

FURTHER PROGRESS

Sharp expects the UK to be as competitive as last year in the run-up to Christmas, the main selling season for most retailers. He does not anticipate a significant improvement in the economic environment in 2013 but said he does expect Debenhams to make further progress.

ASOS posted an expected 40 percent rise in yearly profit as strong trading in overseas markets more than offset slower growth in the UK, and said it was positive on the outlook.

The retailer, which targets young women looking to emulate the designer looks of celebrities such as Nicole Scherzinger and Pixie Lott, made a proforma underlying pretax profit of 44.5 million pounds.

UK retail sales growth of 10 percent was dwarfed by international sales growth of 64 percent.

As well as the UK, the company has websites in the United States, Australia, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. "On a daily basis on the planet we are the most visited fashion website for 15 to 34 year olds," CEO Nick Robertson told Reuters.

He said that by this time next year the group will have set up local language websites in both China and Russia.

"These are just two more markets which we will start small and gradually build," he said.

Prior to Thursday's update, ASOS shares had risen 90 percent so far this year, hitting a record 2,571 pence last week. But the stock was down 8 percent at 2,302p at 0951 GMT (0551 EDT), after Robertson played down recent re-heated speculation of a possible bid from Amazon.Com Inc .

"What I can categorically say is I have haven't spoken to (Amazon CEO) Jeff Bezos for three years," he said.

No Controversy: 5 Fantastic Arguments for Better Birth Control Access

get healthy living updates

The vast majority of sexually active women ? 99% ? have used birth control at some point. Doesn?t sound very controversial, right? Yet somehow a whole lot of folks seem to be ?discussing? birth control lately?and they don?t always have the facts straight.

You may have noticed birth control is what we?re all about, so we wanted to share 5 facts we think everyone should know about birth control in the U.S.

1. It?s a win for taxpayers and businesses.

2. It reduces abortion.

Earlier this month,?two studies?one from researchers in St. Louis and the other from researchers in Iowa?provided solid evidence that access to effective birth control can make a difference in this arena. Both studies made super-effective birth control methods available and affordable to local women over several years?and both studies resulted in major decreases in unplanned pregnancy and abortion.

On the national level, almost half of all pregnancies in the U.S. were unplanned as of 2006?and 43% of those unplanned pregnancies ended in abortion. Of all the women in the U.S. who are having sex and not trying to get pregnant,?two-thirds of them use birth control consistently and correctly?and those birth control superstars account for only 5% of unplanned pregnancies. The other 95% of unplanned pregnancies were to the third of U.S. women who weren?t trying to get pregnant but weren?t using birth control or were using it incorrectly or inconsistently.

Everyone should have the life they want, when they want it. And until someone is ready to have a baby, we believe they should have access to birth control. That?s where we come in. Bedsider makes birth control easier. How? By giving you everything you need to find it, get it, and use it well.

School, Community Mourns Matthew Quigley, Who Died In Tragic ...

Family and friends were devastated to learn that Matthew Taylor Quigley, a 20-year-old graduate of Riverhead High School, lost his life Saturday in a tragic car accident in South Carolina.

Quigley, said Alexander Tuthill Funeral Home Director Ken Rothwell, had just graduated from the Marine Mechanics Institute in Orlando, Florida, and was heading home to Wading River with his girlfriend, Pakee Ristine, who was pregnant with their child.

"He was in a car accident in Columbia, South Carolina," Rothwell said. "He'd just graduated Friday -- he'd packed up the whole vehicle and was heading back to Long Island. They were on their way home."

The couple's unborn baby, Rothwell said, did not survive. "The child was lost in the accident," he said; Ristine, he added, "is not doing well" and remains hospitalized.

Quigley is survived by his heartbroken family, including his mother, Heidi Watson-Wold, his stepfather, Eric Wold, and his father, Joseph Quigley.

His mother said Quigley's friends are mourning his loss. "It's crushing," she said, declining to be interviewed further.

The Riverhead High School faculty was saddened by Quigley's loss and shared memories of the young man who made a forever impression on their hearts.

Riverhead High School Principal David Wicks remembered a young man with dreams.??Matthew Quigley was very passionate about his future," he said. "He made the decision to pursue a career as a marine mechanic and he would not stop until he achieved it. That passion is what led him to Florida to further his education in that area.?Aside from his constant pursuit of success, Matt was simply a great person. He had such a positive essence about him. He made everyone around him feel better about themselves. He had a smile for everyone and I cannot ever remember seeing him upset."

Wicks added, "We here at Riverhead High School are devastated by this tragic loss.? Matt left a lasting impression on his teachers, administrators, and fellow students.? Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.?

Science teacher Anita Guarino said she will always remember Quigley's "gentle, cooperative," nature, describing him as a "gentleman, in the old-fashioned sense," who had a "light-up-the-room smile and "an easygoing, helpful," nature and spirit. "I don't trust words to do justice to this tragic loss of youth and unfulfilled dreams for Matt and his family," she said.

Two educators, Shelley Sancton, who teaches marine biology, and special education teacher Cynthia Woschnik remembered their former student. "Mrs.?Sancton and I have wonderful memories of Matt," said Woschnik. "He loved marine biology. He had a fish tank and had huge goldfish that he took such great care of.?He knew so much about the water and boating."

Quigley, she said, "looked forward to graduating and going to Florida to work with boats and to be on the water." Even after an operation he had during high school, "when he was in pain recovering from surgery, he had a good attitude, a smile on his face and was looking forward to enjoying life," Woschnik added. "He was very helpful with other students or with anything that a teacher needed. He also loved his animals. He looked forward to working on his marine motors and cruising off into the sunset. He will be missed."

"This is so tragic," said Riverhead Central School Superintendent Nancy Carney. "Everyone who knew Matt says he was such a terrific person. My heart goes out to his family and friends."

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alexander-Tuthill Funeral Home, located at?6447 Route 25A, in Wading River.

A funeral service will follow at the funeral home at 8 p.m., with cremation private.
In lieu of flowers,?donations may be made in Matthew's memory to the SoundWaters Organization, an organization dedicated to protecting the Long Island Sound through education. To donate, go to Soundwaters.org?and select the donate tab in the upper right hand corner of the page.

HBT: NLCS winner won't be gassed for Tigers

The Cards and Giants are beating each others? brains out up until less than 48 hours before the World Series starts. Heck, if it rains tonight, maybe to within 24 hours. ?As Buster Olney says, this has to be good for the Tigers, right?

For the?Detroit Tigers, the drawn-out series between the Cards and Giants is all good, because the rotations of the NL teams will be left in a jumble, the bullpens taxed. The Tigers are lined up and all ready to go with?Justin Verlander, et al.

Except the last time they were in the World Series it was set up very much like this. Detroit dispatched the Athletics in the 2006 ALCS in four games, with the last one being on October 14. ?The Mets and Cardinals, in contrast, played a seven game series that ended on October 19. ?The World Series began two days later, with the Tigers having had a full week to rest bodies and set up the rotation, with the Cardinals in a?putative??jumble.? ?And the Cardinals ended up winning that series in five games.

It?s quite possible that, yes, whoever comes out of the NLCS will be jumbled. And I imagine that after 2006 the Tigers learned some lessons about how to spend a long layoff (thus the scrimmages they?ve been playing against minor leaguers and such). But if history shows us anything it?s that we can?t really predict how layoffs and frantic run-ups to a series will play out.

The 7.9 inch "iPad mini" marks Apple's first foray into the smaller-tablet segment. Apple hopes to beat back a charge onto its home turf of consumer electronics hardware, while safeguarding its lead in a larger tablet space that even deep-pocketed rivals like Samsung Electronics have found tough to penetrate.

But at $329, the iPad mini costs more than some analysts had expected. Wall Street fears the gadget will lure buyers away from the $499, flagship 10-inch iPad, while proving ineffective in countering the threat of Amazon's $199 Kindle Fire and Google's Nexus 7, which have wafer-thin margins or no margins.?

"It's coming in the range that most were grumbling about and that, quite frankly, we're a little bit concerned about," said JMP Securities analyst Alex Gauna. "It's a little confusing at this juncture to try and figure out how it fits into the line-up. Is it going to cannibalize the more expensive iPad?"

"It is worth noting that there are zero-margin products out there competing with them now..., and that is presenting some challenges to Apple, which at least at this juncture, Wall Street has some concerns about."

Wall Street analysts have said for months Apple was planning a less expensive version of the iPad to take on cheaper rival devices, a move they say might hurt its margins but prevent its rivals from dominating an increasingly important segment.

The stock was down 2.5 percent at $618.42 in afternoon trade, after gaining 4 percent on Monday in the run-up to the event.

Apple also announced a fourth-generation full-sized iPad with improvements in graphics and processing speeds, just two days before Microsoft is due to show off its own"Surface" tablet. The new iPad starts at $499, its usual entry point.

A smaller tablet is the first device to be added to Apple's compact portfolio under Chief Executive Tim Cook, who took over from co-founder Steve Jobs just before his death.

Amazon's Kindle and Google's Nexus 7 have grabbed a chunk of the lower end of the tablet market and proved demand for a pocket-sized slate exists. That has forced Apple into a space it has avoided and at times derided, analysts say.

The "starting sweet spot" for the tablet would be in the$249-$299 range, according to a survey of more than a thousand consumers by Baird Equity Research.

"When asked what the most they would pay for a smaller iPad was, our respondents on average said that they would pay $242for a 7-inch iPad and $268 for an 8-inch iPad," said William Power, Baird Equity Research analyst.?

Sights on Amazon

Cook kicked off Tuesday's event, held at the opulent California Theater in San Jose. In a rarity for a company that tightly controls events, Apple live-streamed its invitation-only presentation to Apple devices such as the iPad and Macintosh computers.

Apple's chief rival in the smaller-tablet arena is Amazon, which proved a 7-inch tablet at around $200 has consumer appeal. The Kindle Fire, released last year for $199, was one of the hottest-selling holiday gadgets. It pressured Amazon's margins but gave it potentially millions of new high-spending customers.

Amazon sold more than a million Kindles a week during December, paving the way for others like Google with its Nexus 7 to try and beat Apple in a market the company created.

The Internet retailer has now put its second-generation Kindle Fire HD in the market, which it says is the "best-selling product across all of Amazon worldwide," based on undisclosed U.S. sales figures and international preorders.

Google's Nexus 7 tablet, built by Asian manufacturer Asustek, quickly ran out of stock after its July launch.

All three companies will be vying to get their devices on shopping lists during the U.S. holiday season, which traditionally starts next month.

"It's going to be the go-to holiday gift," said Michael Yoshikami, founder of Destination Wealth Management, which owns Apple shares.

Price is key

Jobs famously derided the 7-inch screen, saying such a device should come with sandpaper so users can file down their fingers. But an internal email revealed during a patent trial showed he turned more favorable to the idea by early 2011.

Apple has sold 100 million iPads so far, with the device accounting for 26 percent of Apple's fiscal third-quarter revenue.

But analysts are concerned now about erosion of Apple's industry leading margins as it takes on the Kindle Fire. It earned gross margins of 23 percent to 32 percent on U.S. iPad sales between October 2010 and the end of March 2012, according to a July court filing by Apple.

Rivals haven't fared as well. Amazon's first Kindle Fire just about breaks even, according to IHS iSuppli estimates, and Google has said its Nexus 7 is being sold at cost.

Topeka Capital's Brian White argued a smaller tablet could overtake sales of the iPad in a few years. He is forecasting sales of 5 million to 7 million in the December quarter.

Lenovo IdeaTab A2109

The Google Nexus 7 ?and the New Apple iPad ?are our two top-rated tablets, representing the best combinations of price, performance, and features in small- and large-screen sizes. The Lenovo IdeaTab A2109, with an uncommon 9-inch display but a fair $299 (16GB) list price, falls somewhere in the middle. Its solid aluminum build and capable quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor are all well and good, but a chunky form and mediocre screen hold this middle-of-the-road tablet back.

Design and Features
The IdeaTab A2109 is attractively designed, with a brushed aluminum body and distinctive concave edges. But at 9.3 by 6.5 by 0.46 inches (HWD) and 1.26 pounds, it's not exactly sleek. Along the left edge is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a tough-to-slide Orientation Lock switch, and Volume buttons. The bottom panel is bare, while the right side is home to micro USB and micro HDMI ports. Up top is a Power button, and a long plastic strip along the top of the aluminum back houses two speaker grilles and the rear-facing camera. The plastic strip is removable, revealing a microSD card slot, but the flap is very difficult to remove?so much so that it required a small flat head screwdriver to pry open. Once I accessed the slot, my 64GB SanDisk card worked fine to ratchet up the 16GB of onboard storage.?

The 9-inch size is uncommon, with most Android tablets using 7- or 10-inch displays?the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9?is one of the few tablets with a similar sized screen. With a 1,280-by-800-pixel resolution, on paper, the screen is on par with competitors using the same resolution on slightly larger displays. ?It's sharp and bright, but looks like a lower-quality display than the one found on the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, which shares the same resolution, but looks brighter with more vibrant colors.?Also, the screen has a very poor viewing angle, which makes anything off-center look washed out.

For pictures and video, you get a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.?While the cameras will suffice for stills in a pinch,?producing poor images that suffer from considerable noise and general lack of sharpness,?video is almost unuseable.?The rear-facing camera is capable of 1080p, but the resulting video is about as bad as I've seen on a tablet. Frame rates top out at 12 fps outdoors and drop below 10 indoors, with blurry, out of focus, and choppy video.

As far as connectivity, the IdeaTab A2109 is a?Wi-Fi-only tablet that hooks into 802.11b/g/n networks on the 2.4GHz band. There's also Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS on board, both of which worked fine in my tests.?

Performance and Software
Powering the A2109 is Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.2GHz with 1GB RAM. This seems to be the new standard for mid- to high-end Android tablets, which is good, since the chip generally produces fast and responsive performance in all of the devices it powers. The A2109 scored on par with the Nexus 7 in every benchmark, and the tablet felt fast in actual use. Gaming is also solid, and unlike its Qualcomm-powered sibling, the IdeaTab S2110A, it has access to all the exclusive Nvidia gaming titles. It's also much smoother than the S2110A in general, with more polished animations and app transitions. ?

The tablet runs Android 4.0.4 "Ice Cream Sandwich" with the same modifications found on the S2110A. You get the somewhat-gimmicky 3D cube animations, but they're a lot smoother on the A2109. The home screen is populated by various Lenovo widgets, ranging from local weather to calendars and notepads. Preloaded apps include Norton Security, Evernote, Docs To Go, and some games like Cut the Rope HD. And there's a shortcut on the system bar that brings up five options for tweaking the tablet's settings.?

For video, the A2109 supports Xvid, DivX, MPEG4, H.264, and AVI videos at up to 1080p resolution. For audio, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WAV, and WMA files all played fine. The speakers, while branded with an SRS WOW HD tag, sound weak and lack any substantial bass response.

In our battery rundown test, which loops a video with the screen brightness set to maximum and Wi-Fi switched on, the A2109 lasted an underwhelming 6 hours and 46 minutes. For comparison, the 7-inch Nexus 7 lasted 10 hours, 37 minutes, while the larger screen TF300 lasted 7 hours, 53 minutes on the same test.

Conclusions
The Lenovo IdeaTab A2109 doesn't do enough to stand out. Its unconventional screen size may appeal to those torn between the 7-inch and 10-inch form factors, but the low-quality screen should be a concern. And while it's buoyed by a Tegra 3 chip, its overly thick build makes it less appealing. The $299 price point puts it between the $200 Nexus 7 and the $380 Transformer Pad TF300, both of which I'd recommend over the A2109. Both the Nexus 7 and TF300 offer better screens, thinner designs, and the newest version of Android, 4.1 "Jelly Bean." The A2109 isn't a bad choice per se, but there's really no reason to settle for mediocrity when better options abound.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? After eight years in Orlando and six months of recovery from back surgery, Dwight Howard returned to an NBA court Sunday night on a new coast and wearing a new gold uniform.

The significance of the moment finally hit the normally playful big man during pregame introductions in front of fans who gave him a standing ovation before his first basket for the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I actually shed a couple of tears," Howard said. "During the starting lineups, one of my teammates caught me, so I tried to hide it, but I was just excited. It is really emotional, because I hadn't been on the court in a while. I didn't know what to expect, but it's a very humbling experience."

Howard had 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots in his Lakers debut, but Los Angeles still dropped to 0-6 in the preseason when DeMarcus Cousins rallied the Sacramento Kings to a 99-92 victory on Sunday night.

The loss was secondary to the Lakers, who finally unveiled their new franchise center after Howard sat out the first five preseason games while exercising caution with his recovery. The six-time All-Star played 33 minutes and made five of Los Angeles' 22 turnovers against the Kings, fighting his game rust with energy from the opening tip.

The experience might have been overwhelming at first, but Howard quickly settled in for the Los Angeles starting five's first playing time together. It wasn't perfect, but it showed formidable promise for the long season ahead.

"We lost the game, but there's a lot of bright spots out there, and we're going to continue to get better," Howard said. "We're going to get our timing down and start reading each other a little better, but right now we're early in the process."

Kobe Bryant scored 21 points as the Lakers' starters played down the stretch of a tight game against the Kings, who finished the game with 10 unanswered points. After Cousins, who scored 16 points, put the Kings ahead with consecutive layups in the final moments, Bryant and Steve Nash missed late shots as Sacramento (4-1) hung on with a lineup mostly consisting of reserves against the Lakers' starters.

"Our rhythm is already there," Bryant said. "It's just about the little nuances, a few of our plays. ... We've done it in practice, and I think it was exciting to show the fans what kind of potential we have. I think we're a little ahead of the curve."

Los Angeles' starting five played together for four significant stretches and fairly brimmed with potential. With Howard and Bryant already playing well off each other, the Lakers finished the second quarter with a slick 18-4 run capped by Bryant's buzzer-beating 22-footer on a pass from Pau Gasol.

Howard hadn't played in a game since early April, when the Magic shut him down for the season with a herniated disc. Los Angeles finally ended his protracted departure from Orlando in August, trading All-Star center Andrew Bynum to Philadelphia in the four-team deal.

"I just never thought this would happen, me being in L.A.," Howard said.

Not many superstars get hazed in the preseason, but the Lakers did it to Howard before warm-ups. They put Howard at the front of the line to run on the court ? and then everybody stayed in the tunnel while Howard ran onto the court by himself, getting a huge ovation and a laugh.

Nash pulled the prank spontaneously when he saw Howard leading the lineup.

"I just grabbed Pau and held him," the two-time MVP said with a grin.

Howard and Nash both got loud ovations from the packed Staples Center stands during introductions, although the biggest cheers were reserved for Kobe.

Howard immediately made an impact, getting an assist on Bryant's 3-pointer on the Lakers' first possession. Howard then threw down a delicate two-handed dunk on the Lakers' second possession with an alley-oop pass from Gasol ? a sight that might be awfully common this season.

Not everything went well: Kings rookie Thomas Robinson posterized Howard with a breathtaking, one-handed putback dunk while flying above the veteran.

"You could tell his timing was off a little bit at times," Lakers coach Mike Brown said. "A couple of times where he would have blocked a shot, he was maybe half a step late. Overall, he looked good."

With all five starters on the floor for the final minutes, Los Angeles took the lead on Metta World Peace's off-balance 3-pointers and led 92-89 before Cousins' baskets. Nash then missed a runner in the lane with 21 seconds to play, and Jimmer Fredette and Thornton made two free throws apiece surrounding Bryant's miss on an off-balance 3-pointer.

Aaron Brooks scored 16 points and Marcus Thornton had 15 for the Kings, who beat the Lakers 103-98 in Las Vegas on Friday night. The teams meet yet again in San Diego on Thursday.

"You've just got to make them work," Sacramento's Chuck Hayes said of playing against Howard and Gasol at the same time. "They're like the Avengers out there. They're huge. You've got to keep fighting and make it hard for them every possession."
