Google Confirms That Project Glass Will Work With iPhone

happy_glassAfter making a visit to a disappointingly bland Google conference room behind frosted-glass doors in New York, the Verge's Joshua Topolsky got some hands-on time with Glass and his in-depth report included an interesting little bit of information about Glass that many people have been wondering about. Glass, he wrote, will be compatible with Android - as most people always expected - and Apple's iPhone. Google just confirmed to us that this is indeed correct, though the company didn't want to comment on the details of how this will work.

Report: ICE detained 800 U.S. citizens in 4 years

A new report using records obtained from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement?(ICE) found that between 2008 and 2012, ICE issued nearly 1 million ?detainers,? or ?detention hold? requests asking local, state or federal authorities to detain a suspected undocumented immigrant. According to the report from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse out of Syracuse University known as TRAC, which gathers data on government activities, these detainers ended up including over 800 American citizens and over 28,000 legal permanent residents.

The report also found that in?more than two out of three (77.4 percent) detainers issued, the individual identified had no criminal record. Of the remaining?22.6 percent who had a criminal record, only 8.6 percent were classified as a Level 1 offense, though some records show some of those Level 1 offenders had committed traffic violations or illegal entry and not serious crimes.

Responding to the report?s release, Pablo Alvarado, executive director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), stated, ?The Obama Administration?s policy of using police as immigration ?force multipliers??through programs like Secure Communities has violated civil rights, imperiled public safety, and compounded injustice.?

But ICE deputy press secretary Gillian Christensen stated: ?As the TRAC report itself notes, its conclusions are based on data that dates back four years, prior to many of ICE?s enforcement reforms including the new detainer guidance issued by the agency on Dec. 21.??The new guidelines, Christensen added, restrict ICE detentions for minor traffic violations or misdemeanors, and attempt to focus on more serious crimes.Immigration authorities can issue detainers if they suspect someone may be in the country illegally, and there are guidelines on how long a person can be held and under what circumstances.

The TRAC report does not have information on how many detainers were lifted or how many people were eventually deported. ?It is illegal for authorities to detain U.S. citizens. The report found almost 3,500 facilities received one or more ICE detainers.

The NDLON says it is calling on the Senate to hold hearings on the use of detainers.

Sunlight forecasts to benefit electric utilities and ? NASCAR

Race car drivers are likely to benefit from a newly-launched $4.1 million U.S. government-funded program to improve 36-hour forecasts of incoming energy from the sun.

Cloud cover impacts racetrack temperature, which in turn affects how well tires grip the pavement, researchers working on the program explained.

The program?s primary aim is to help electric utilities forecast how much electricity their solar power plants will generate every fifteen minutes, which is largely dependent on how cloudy the skies are during daylight hours.

Forecasting cloud cover, however, is notoriously difficult. Clouds form on microscopic droplets of water or ice and are affected by factors including winds, humidity, sunlight, surface heat, airborne particles, as well as chemicals and gases in the atmosphere.

Solar energy output is also affected by what types of clouds form ? thin, wispy ones high in the sky let in more sunlight than thick, low-lying clouds, note researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

The fickleness of clouds, in turns, can wreak havoc on electric utilities with solar power plants on their grid. If cloud cover reduces the amount of sunlight available, they need to source it from somewhere else such as natural gas or coal-fired power plants, which are more expensive to operate.

?We can help predict when those renewable resources will be available and that way they can better integrate them into the grid and they can plan their power rates accordingly,? Sue Ellen Haupt, director of the weather systems and assessment program at NCAR, told NBC News.

Her group is heading up the project, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The researchers aim to design a system that uses an array of instruments and techniques including a laser-based technology that measures particles in the atmosphere, satellites, computer models, and artificial intelligence.

Central to the effort will be three total sky imagers in each of several locations that will observe the sky, triangulate the depth and height of clouds, and trace their paths across the sky.

The output of the system will prove useful to utility managers as well as just about everyone else, including local weather forecasters tasked to provide the public with accurate and reliable information used to do everything from dress themselves and decide whether or not to hit the beach.

The modeling "is very specific to solar, but we do expect everything that we do will feed back into the public domain and become available for lots of different uses downstream," Haupt said.

YotaPhone inks manufacturing deal, plans to launch in the second half of 2013

Did you think that Russia's YotaPhone was consigned to the island of misfit concept devices? The company has just inked a production deal with Singapore-based OEM Hi-P international, with YotaPhone planning to launch the handset globally in the second half of 2013. While Hi-P isn't a name you should be familiar with, a cursory search reveals that it's previously produced hardware for Apple, RIM BlackBerry and, most notably, Amazon's E-Reader division. At the same time, the Russian business is opening up an R&D center in Singapore to help research "subsequent generations of YotaPhone," so it looks like Janus devices could be here to stay.

See more photos ? German automaker Volkswagen has been teasing electric versions of its Golf for a while now (several decades, in fact) but images of a production model have now been leaked.

Czech website AutoForum.cz shows images of the latest e-Golf, based on the brand new Mk7-generation car.

The car will be revealed in full at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in the next few weeks, but preliminary details suggest it won't be dissimilar to major competitors like the Nissan Leaf or Ford Focus Electric.

A 26.5 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack should give a range of around 108 miles, presumably on the European cycle. This is near-identical to the Nissan Leaf's European driving range, so a similar EPA figure of between 70-80 miles can be expected.

Likewise, performance should be similar.

A front-mounted, 115-horsepower electric motor with 199 lbs-ft of torque translates to a 0-62 mph time of 11.8 seconds. Speed is apparently limited to 84 mph, a little less than the Leaf's 90 mph. Charging should take between 5-7 hours from a 240V 'Level 2' charging point.

Naturally, weight has risen over that of a standard Golf, by just over 550 pounds. Luggage space has decreased by a negligible cubic foot, thanks to the placement of the batteries under the rear seats.

Three driving modes should be available, letting drivers extract the most from their e-Golf. Normal, Eco and Range settings can be selected. The first leaves everything as-is, while Eco cuts power to 95 horsepower and reduces top speed. Range really curtails speedy driving, with top speed limited to just 59 mph and disconnects the air conditioning unit.

Little more has been revealed about the e-Golf, but we expect more details to pour in as the Geneva Motor Show draws closer.
