Asus rolls out Android 4.0 on tablets

Asus is planning to launch a new 7-inch tablet running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and the Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. The Asus ME370T tablet will sell for USD 249, it was announced at a Nvidia press conference at CES in Las Vegas where Asus CEO Jerry Shen also appeared. The companies also confirmed that the Asus Transformer Prime tablet, launched in December, will be upgraded to Android 4.0, in an over-the-air update rolling out already. Nvidia also highlighted the improved performance of the Tegra 3, which has five times the power of its predecessor and supports up to 12 hours of battery life for mobile devices. Tegra 3's Variable SMP architecture enables it to switch between the four main CPU cores and a fifth lower-power "companion" CPU core for less demanding tasks and active standby mode. It also comes with PRISM, a power-saving backlight technology which can reduce backlight power consumption by up to 40 percent by modulating the backlight per pixel, frame and scene. It also offers enhanced touch-screen response with DirectTouch. The feature offloads much of the touch panel's processing to just one of the CPU cores, enabling up to six times faster touch processing and lower power consumption, Nivida said. The company also confirmed that it's working with Microsoft on a developer-seeding program to enable manufacturers to quickly begin development on Nvidia hardware once the next preview of Windows 8 is released in late February.
