The city needs a more skilled and educated workforce to compete in the 21st century economy, Kenneth Fiola, the executive vice president of the Fall River Office of Economic Development, told business leaders today.
Fiola was the featured speaker at the State of Business meeting held by the Chamber of Commerce in McGovern?s Restaurant Thursday morning.
Manufacturing jobs are disappearing in the city. The 19,000 manufacturing jobs in the city in 1991 dropped to 4,375 by 2012 ? a drop that mirrors national numbers, Fiola said.
But the city added almost 1,000 health care jobs during the five years of the recession, from 2007 to 2012. Also, the number of small businesses grew by 200 during the recession, Fiola said.
The new jobs require more education and more skills than manufacturing jobs did, Fiola said.
?This is a workforce in transition,? he said. ?This is a city in transition.?
