Tick in man's ear gives him tinnitus - WTOC-TV: Savannah, Beaufort ...

By Randy Dotinga
HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, Sept. 21 (HealthDay News) -- When a 63-year-old man went to a hospital in Switzerland to report a buzzing in his ear, the staff got more than they bargained for when they looked inside. A tick was attached to his eardrum, and it possibly got there with the help of a friendly feline.

The man is fine now that the tick has been removed, according to a brief report in the Sept. 20 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. While it's uncommon for ticks to make their way into the ear canal, emergency physicians say insects do make appearances in this fragile orifice.

"Insects in the ear are relatively common so this case is not very surprising," said Dr. Donald Keamy Jr., a pediatric otolaryngologist -- ear, nose and throat doctor -- at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. "A case report like this is likely one of many other cases that were not reported."

The report said the man visited a hospital in Bern, Switzerland, while suffering from itching and "bubbling tinnitus," a kind of buzzing, in the ear. "Technically, this is not the typical high-pitched noise that is heard by patients with hearing loss," said Keamy, who was not involved with the case.

An evaluation of his right ear revealed that a tick had attached itself to the eardrum. The tick had probably caused the buzzing sound through its contact with the eardrum, Keamy explained.

The tick species is a type that's often found on cats in Europe.

The hospital removed the tick by numbing the man's ear and then using a suction device to suck it out. The tick can spread Lyme disease, but tests later revealed that the man didn't get infected; he recovered without further problems.

How did a tick manage to get in the man's ear in the first place? "On review," the report stated, "the patient remembered having had close contact with his domestic cat the evening before the symptoms began."

Keamy said the tick could have bitten the man inside his ear, but probably wouldn't have caused permanent damage.

Dr. Michael Lanigan, an attending physician in emergency medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City, offered this advice for people who live in or visit places where ticks live: "The best way to prevent tick-borne disease is to check yourself and others -- particularly your children -- for ticks frequently."

Keamy added that it's smart to wear long-sleeved clothing while you're in wooded areas where ticks live. Treating your dog or cat to keep ticks at bay is another good idea, he said. "If you believe you have had a tick bite," he said, "see your primary care physician to discuss possible antibiotic treatment."

Samsung ad takes yet another shot at iPhone lines, new iPhone 5 features

New Samsung ad takes another shot at iPhone lines as well as new iPhone 5 featuresSamsung has rolled out another of its ads that aim to poke fun at Apple iPhone 5 buyers and those that plan on waiting in line for one tomorrow. Samsung released a similar ad last year just after the iPhone 4S went on sale; so these poor attempts at advertising and humor from Samsung are nothing really new. This latest ad is supposedly there to promote its Samsung Galaxy S3 under the heading of ?The Next Big Thing Is Already Here?.

The ad tries to make fun of the iPhone 5?s use of sapphire crystals by saying the phone will be like a precious jewel, making fun of the repositioning of the headphone jack as if it was some sort of big deal and the all-digital Lightning connector. It?s like Samsung is trying to tell you that iPhone users are dumb people who get over excited over any tiny little design change or small feature. Samsung then goes on to insinuate that iPhone users are mainly now the older generation and the hip and cool people are using the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Take a look at the video below and let us know what you think? Personally I think Samsung should just concentrate on its own phones features and not spend its marketing budget trying to be humorous or knocking better products!

3 Reasons why Higher Priced Homes take Longer to Sell

Many, if not most, homes in Preston Hollow and the Park Cities fall in to what is considered the "higher price" range of properties in Dallas. That is $1 million and over. And many of those homes are more challenging when it comes to selling. Homes over $1 million tend to take longer than the average days on market for lower priced homes. Why is that?

1. Smaller pool of prospective buyers. There are fewer people who can afford a $1 million home than can afford a $100,000 home. And these buyers are pickier. In this price range, the property needs to be close to perfect to fetch a good price. When comparing the number of buyers in this price range with the number of homes on the market, there is more competition in the higher price ranges.

2. Financing. It is so much harder to get financing these days - for everyone. It doesn't matter if you're a professional athlete who has just signed a multimillion dollar contract, or an esteemed surgeon recruited by our top hospitals. Issues like your lack of previous work history with the same employer, self-employment status and credit ratings can make financing a home difficult.

3. Unique is harder to sell. Many higher priced home tend to fall into the 'unique' category. Unique can be anything from custom wall treatments to specialty rooms ( like a pet room, cigar room, motorcycle garage,...). People like their own kind of unique - not someone else's idea of unique. A very large home - more than 8,000 square feet - is unique. So is a small home in a neighborhood of larger homes. Sorry, but plain vanilla is just easier to sell.

So what helps you sell a $1+ million property?

Ensure you are reaching your target buyers. These buyers are using a buyer's agent and they are searching on the internet for properties. Many of them are moving to Dallas from out of state. Think about who your buyers are - where they currently live, what they read, ...

Luxury home buyers also work with agents. Those agents need to know your property. Like many businesses, real estate is about relationships and active agents in North Dallas know the other active agents. Make sure your property is listed with a Realtor who has a good relationship with a lot of other agents in several different brokerages.

Say hello to a new way to sell your cellphone

13 hrs.

Been thinking of?upgrading to a new cellphone? You may be in luck. Almost 150 new, artificially intelligent kiosks that buy back people's old cellphones have been installed in malls in several U.S. states. Users get cash for their phones, while the unwanted devices get a second life, which keeps the phones' toxic metals out of landfills.?

EcoATM founder Mark Bowles came up with the idea after reading that only three percent of people worldwide have ever recycled a cellphone, he told InnovationNewsDaily. "I thought about my own case. Why didn't I do it?" he said. "I didn't know where to do it and I didn't have an incentive."?

EcoATM aims to answer both problems by putting recycling kiosks "in people's normal paths" and by giving people an alluring reward: "Immediate cash, on the spot," Bowles said.

To use an ecoATM machine, users place their unwanted devices on the machine's scanner. EcoATMs deploy computer vision and artificial intelligence to recognize more than 4,000 makes and models of phones, chargers and other accessories. The machines also assess damage to the devices, sorting them into one of eight categories of conditions. [Do-It-Yourself Cat Door Recognizes Your Feline]

From there, the computer system estimates a value for the device. Possible payouts range from $1 to $250, according to the ecoATM website. Users who want to go through with the trade choose either cash or store credit, or donate the value to one of several charities.?

On the other end of the trade, ecoATM has relationships with international companies that have pre-bid on phones in different conditions. Those partners resell phones in good condition, mostly to American customers, Bowles said. Three-quarters of the phones ecoATM processes are reused, according to the company. The other 25 percent are recycled for their precious metals and electronic components.

"The ecoATM project is an extremely innovative way to motivate the public with an incentive to do the right thing with discarded electronics, both socially and environmentally," Glenn Larsen, an officer who oversees National Science Foundation grants to ecoATM,?said in a statement.?The foundation has supported ecoATM with two grants for small businesses. EcoATM is otherwise funded by private investors.?

Getting a computer program to distinguish between phones was no easy feat, Bowles said. "A lot of these phones are just a dark sheet of glass that's a rectangle," he said. In addition, blemishes to the phones' screens, such as smudgy fingerprints and cracked glass, will look similar to a computer program, even though they mean very different things for the valuation of the phone, he explained.

To make its judgments, the ecoATM kiosk subjects each phone to a series of visual tests, lighting the phone in different ways. It also asks users to plug in their phones for an electronic evaluation, after automatically offering users the correct plug.

EcoATM's computer algorithms accurately recognize phone models and classify damage 97.5 percent of the time, according to the National Science Foundation. The algorithms are able to learn from mistakes, so that number may improve in the future. The company plans to continue researching how to improve accuracy.?

EcoATM's?kiosk locator?lists almost 150 locations in Washington, California, Colorado, Texas, Georgia and on the East Coast. The company plans to have 300 machines in place by the end of the year.
